Sports fraternity seeks Bharat Ratna for Dhyan Chand

Visakhapatnam: Marking National Sports Day, the birth anniversary of hockey wizard Dhyan Chand, the sports fraternity on Monday demanded that the Union government confer the Bharat Ratna to him and set up world class infrastructure to produce sports heroes from Andhra Pradesh.

Students of Andhra University and a few colleges and sports associations of the Olympic Association, Visakhapatnam district, took out a rally from Beach Road to the statue of Dhyan Chand at AU.

The rally was organised by the District Sports Authority in association with the Olympic Association, Visakhapatnam district and AU on Thursday morning.

Mr P.V.G.R. Naidu, president of the AP Volleyball Association and Visakha West MLA, flagged off the rally.

AU vice-chancellor G. Nageswara Rao, registrar V. Uma Maheswara Rao, director of physical education (in-charge) N. Vijayamohan Olympian M.V. Manikyalu and sports personalities took part in the rally and garlanded the statue of Dhyan Chand.

District Sports Development Officer, Vizag, June Gallyot said they would felicitate veteran players, coaches and young players, who made Vizag proud.
