CWG 2018: Vinesh Phogat clinches gold, Sakshi Malik settles for bronze

Gold Coast: India's Vinesh Phogat bagged a gold medal, while Olympian Sakshi Malik settled for bronze in their respective wrestling categories of the ongoing 21st edition of the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday.

Vinesh thrashed Canada's Jessica Macdonald by technical superiority to win the gold in the finals of the women's 50 kg nordic event category at the Carrara Sports Arena.

The Indian won a total of 13 points in comparison to the three points won by MacDonald

With this, Vinesh became just the first Indian woman to clinch two gold in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games. She had earlier grabbed gold in the women's 48 kg category in Glasgow in 2014.

Meanwhile, Sakshi took away the bronze after fighting hard against Tayla Ford and emerged victorious with a 6-5 scoreline in the 62 kg Nordic category.

In the men's freestyle 125 kg wrestling category, Sumit Malik handed India another gold after his opponent Nigeria's Sinivie Boltic was ruled out of the final match due to an injury.

With this, India's medal tally at the Games has now gone up to a total of 52 medals, including 23 gold, 13 silver and 16 bronze.
