Chennai: On receiving a loud cheer from the crowd, coming in to bat at no.5, at a time when Team India was in deep trouble, MS Dhoni treated the Chepauk faithful with a gritty knock dragging the hosts to a target of 281-7 in the 1st ODI vs Australia on Sunday.

The former India skipper was hailed for his match-winning knock, but it wouldn’t have lasted long as Hilton Cartwright granted a lifeline to Dhoni by failing to strike the stumps on a run-out opportunity during the 22nd over of the Indian innings.

Dhoni took time to settle at the crease and looked for another single before being involved in a mix-up with Kedar Jadhav at the other end. The 36-year-old drove a fullish delivery to the covers and was suddenly caught stranded in the middle of the pitch, As Jadhav stood still at the other end.

Cartwright at short extra-cover took a shy at the stumps but hurried with his chance where Dhoni wasn’t even in the frame. Displeased by the call at the opposite end, Dhoni responded with a serious stare to the Mumbai batsman, followed by a shake of the head.

The pressure soon took a toll on Jadhav, as he miscued his pull the next ball straight to Cartwright at midwicket.
