London: Former Chelsea captain John Terry is all set to join Aston Villa. Aston Villa owner Tony Xia confirmed the news on Monday.

Terry was given a perfect sendoff by Chelsea in May after the club registered an astounding 5-1 win over bottom club Sunderland to end their Premier League campaign.

He had hinted at possibly retiring in the wake of winning the title last season and also had offers to move abroad, reports the Guardian.

The 37-year-old formally became a free agent on Saturday but has now decided his immediate future.

The contract of Terry, who made more than 700 senior appearances for Chelsea, is understood to be lucrative, especially by Championship standards, as he is set to earn around £60,000-a-week at Villa.

It is believed that despite interest from West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Bournemouth, Terry has been persuaded to drop down to England's second tier by Villa manager Steve Bruce.
