WFI Chief Calls for India to Boycott Pakistan After T20 WC Decision
This came after Pakistan decided to boycott its group-stage match against India in the ICC World T20 World Cup, scheduled for February 15
Noida: Expressing strong criticism of Pakistan's announcement to boycott the league match against India in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026, Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Sanjay Singh said that the Indian government, along with players, should also boycott the neighbouring country.
This came after Pakistan decided to boycott its group-stage match against India in the ICC World T20 World Cup, scheduled for February 15. The Pakistan government said in a post on X that the Pakistan team “shall not take the field” in the match against India.
Speaking to ANI, Sanjay Singh said, “The Indian government and our players should also totally boycott Pakistan. There should be a complete boycott.”
Sanjay Singh also praised the organisation of the Pro Wrestling League (PWL) 2026, which concluded on Sunday.
Speaking about the league, the WFI president said the PWL is progressing as planned, adding that additional preparation time would have been beneficial. He noted that motivated wrestlers are delivering unexpected results, which will help India in international competitions.
“Everything is going as planned. If we had a little more time, it would have been better. The league is going on well. There are unexpected results because our wrestlers are highly motivated. This will benefit us in international tournaments,” he said.
In the PWL 2026 final between Haryana Thunders and Delhi Dangal Warriors on Sunday, Haryana Thunders were crowned champions after a thrilling contest that went down to the final bout at the Noida Indoor Stadium, according to a release.
With the scores tied at 4-4 after eight bouts, the title was decided in the women’s 62 kg clash, where Paris Olympic silver medallist Iryna Koliadenko delivered a dominant performance.
Her emphatic 16-0 technical superiority victory sealed a dramatic 5-4 win and the PWL 2026 title for Haryana Thunders, marking one of the most intense finals in league history.
Haryana Thunders will take home Rs 1.5 crore in prize money along with the PWL 2026 trophy, while runners-up Delhi Dangal Warriors will receive Rs 75 lakh.
Among individual honours, Turan Bayramov of Delhi Dangal Warriors won the Player of the Tournament award worth Rs 2.5 lakh after securing seven wins in seven bouts in the men’s 57 kg category, accumulating 59 points. Chandermohan of Punjab Royals finished as the tournament’s highest point scorer.
Neha Sangwan of Haryana Thunders was named Player of the Match for keeping the final alive until the last bout, while Ronak of Delhi Dangal Warriors won Fighter of the Match for his performance in the men’s 125 kg category. Akshay Dhere of Haryana Thunders was named Impact Player of the Match for his performance in the men’s 57 kg category.
The championship night began with Delhi taking an early lead through undefeated Turan Bayramov in the 74 kg men’s bout with an 8-1 victory. Haryana levelled the score in the 76 kg women’s bout as U20 World Champion Kajal Dhochack edged past European Champion Anastasiya Alpyeeva 3-1.
Delhi regained the lead in the 65 kg men’s bout as captain Sujeet Kalkal defeated World Championships silver medallist Tumur Ochir Tulga 8-6. Haryana responded through multiple-time world champion Yui Susaki, who secured a technical superiority win over Saarika to make it 2-2.
Delhi again moved ahead in the 86 kg men’s bout with Vafaeipour Hadi Bakhtiar’s dominant 11-0 win over Ashirov Ashraf. Haryana struck back as Akshay Dhere overwhelmed Amit Kumar by technical superiority in the 57 kg men’s bout.
The heavyweight bout saw Ronak defeat Anirudh Gulia 12-2 to give Delhi a 4-3 lead. Haryana forced a decider when Neha Sangwan pinned Anjali in the 57 kg women’s bout to level the scores at 4-4.
In the decisive final bout, Iryna Koliadenko showcased her experience and composure to defeat Anjli with a 16-0 technical superiority win, clinching the title for Haryana Thunders.
Haryana Thunders’ victory brought the curtain down on a memorable PWL 2026 season marked by drama, competitiveness, and a final that lived up to expectations.
