CHENNAI: Chennai Super Kings’ push for a playoff spot enters a decisive phase as they take on bottom-placed Lucknow Super Giants at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Mild showers across the city over the last few days have provided respite from the oppressive heat and humidity, and conditions are expected to differ from the last time CSK played here. The red-soil wicket has been kept under cover and the unpredictability of the conditions adds intrigue to the contest.

Having secured back-to-back victories, Super Kings will be keen to maintain their momentum. With 10 points in as many games, CSK remain in the hunt for a place in the top half of the table, while Lucknow languish at the bottom with six points from 10 matches. Interestingly, these two sides will face each other in consecutive fixtures, with only a four-day turnaround before they travel from Chennai to Lucknow for the return leg.

In their previous outing, CSK’s spin duo of Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein exploited the sluggish surface expertly before Sanju Samson anchored the chase with a composed unbeaten 87. Samson has been the standout batter for the side this season, amassing 402 runs at an average of 57.42. The next best is Ruturaj Gaikwad with 251 runs at 31.37 — a gap that underlines Chennai’s batting concerns. However, youngster Kartik Sharma, batting at No. 4, has offered much-needed stability in the middle order.

Pacer Anshul Kamboj has emerged as one of CSK’s biggest positives this season. Impressive at the death, he has claimed 17 wickets in 10 matches and ranks among the leading wicket-takers of the tournament.

CSK assistant bowling coach Sridharan Sriram said spinners Noor and Akeal complement each other well. “They share a good rapport with each other and help each other out on the ground. They're well prepared tactically and aware of how to plan against different oppositions, so I think they've struck a good chord between themselves.”

Lucknow, meanwhile, will draw confidence from their narrow DLS win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Mitchell Marsh’s blistering century set up the victory before pacer Prince Yadav produced a match-winning spell, returning three wickets. Prince has also enjoyed a productive campaign, with 16 wickets in 10 games.

Lucknow bowling coach Bharat Arun said Prince had shown glimpses of his potential last year. “This year, at the pre-season camp, we had a lot of one-on-one chats and he worked perfectly on his strengths. We challenged him in every single session on execution,” he added.
