IPL 2018 Auction: Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell lead list of 55 Australian players

Mumbai: Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell are the front-running names that will lead a fancy list of 55 Australian cricketers aiming to earn big in the Indian Premier League (IPL) players’ auction set to be held on the 27th and 28th of January in Bengaluru.

Both Starc and Maxwell fall into the list of the top 16 marquee players – the ones with the highest base price as named by the IPL officials.

Apart from the duo, seven other Australian cricketers including the likes of Chris Lynn, James Faulkner, Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Johnson, Cameron White have been allotted a reserve price of 2 crores.

D’Arcy Short who has taken the Big Bash League (BBL) by storm is available for the lowest reserve price of INR 20 lakhs, while wicket-keeper Alex Carey, the only other player with more than 400 runs to his name will also be on the radar of IPL bidders.

But the Australians will tough face competition in a total pool of 578 players, including 360 Indian players. A total of 1122 cricketers registered themselves for the cash-rich league but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) trimmed the list to 578.

However, with 18 players already being retained in total by IPL teams, including Steve Smith and David Warner, only 182 out of 578 players will be awarded contracts.

Smith and Warner secured the most expensive IPL contracts offered to an Australian after they were retained by Rajasthan Royals (RR) and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) respectively for a whopping sum of 12 crores.
