Mumbai: Joe Root’s whirlwind 83 set up England’s record chase of 230/8 against South Africa in a Group 1 World Cup Twenty20 match at the Wankhede stadium here on Friday.

Root was out in the penultimate over after hitting six boundaries and four sixes in his 44-ball knock but England romped home with two balls to spare.

Openers Jason Roy (16-ball 43) and Alex Hales (17) began well with a 48-run stand in just 15 balls. Earlier, South Africa had made an impressive 229 for 4.
