Johannesburg: Team India continued their dominance over South Africa with a 28-run win, in the first T20 international at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Shikhar Dhawan and Bhuvneshwar Kumar played pivotal roles as India took 1-0 lead in the three-match series, just two days after completing a 5-1 thrashing of the hosts in the Momentum one-day international series.

India though suffered a major scare on Sunday after skipper Virat Kohli suffered left leg strain and left the field in the 13th over of the South Africa innings.

"The injury was early on in the innings when I went for the single. It was my glute and thankfully not my hammy. You know how I am, I had to bend a bit more quickly. Then I felt a little bit more stiffness in my glute and that is why I went off. Not to be stupid and tear a muscle, I decided to go off and get it checked," said Kohli.

Rohit Sharma gave India flying start to the innings as Shikhar Dhawan and Kohli capitalised on the platform laid by the opener to take India to a strong position.

Kohli got a reprieve when he was dropped by Farhan Behardien at long-on when he had scored only 10 runs but failed to cash in as he was dismissed by Tabraiz Shamsi for 26.

Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar finished with career-best bowling figures of 5/24. With this feat, Kumar became the second Indian after Yuzvendra Chahal to pick up 5 wickets in a T20I.

The second T20 of the series will be played on Wednesday.
