Chennai: The city of Chennai has been in mourning with the passing away Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president M Karunanidhi here on Tuesday after prolonged illness.
The city hospital, where the leader was admitted, said that the 94-year-old leader’s end came at 6.10 p.m. on Tuesday.
The veteran of Dravidian politics was shifted to the hospital on July 28 from his Gopalapuram residence following a dip in his blood pressure and he was under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit ever since.
The scriptwriter-turned-politician dominated the Tamil-language movie industry as a screenwriter beginning in the 1950s, and later the political scene for nearly five decades. He became the Tamil Nadu chief minister in 1969 and held that position five times for a total of 19 years.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the three-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners and India and CSK star Suresh Raina paid condolences to the late political leader, who was an avid cricket fan.
CSK tweeted, saying, “A sun has set in Tamil Nadu today! His contribution to the language and the state is immeasurable. #RIPKalaignar”
Suresh Raina, who had played majority of his IPL cricket with CSK, barring a two-year stint with Gujarat Lions when the Chennai-based franchise was suspended following the spot-fixing saga, tweeted, “Deeply saddened by the demise of Kalaignar Karunanidhi. My condolences to the family! #Karunanidhi”
