Mumbai: Heading into the New Year having won nine bilateral series, Team India will face their biggest test when they face South Africa in the first Test at Cape Town in South Africa.

Virat Kohli’s India, who is top-ranked in the ICC Test Rankings, look to shed the tag of poor travellers as their status as the top-ranked nation faces a stern examination. The star Indian batting line-up consisting the likes of Murali Vijay, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan will have a big task to prove on pace-friendly South African wickets.

India’s dominance, which has been attributed to their home form last faced such similar conditions during the tour of Australia in 2014-15. India went down 2-0 in the series and since then have played just one out of its 10 series outside Asia.

The Proteas, who are the closest challengers to India at the top of the Test rankings, have a full-strength squad as they are boosted with a return of several key players. AB de Villiers returns after a two-year absence from first-class cricket, while the bowling attack will witness the comeback of Morne Morkel and Vernon Philander.

The visitors will also confident about their bowling line-up which has far more bite than the teams that have toured previously. Can Kohli’s men replicate their home dominance overseas or will their abysmal away record once again continue to haunt them?

The three-match T20 series will be followed by six ODIs and three T20s that will stretch towards February.
