Few IPL breakups have been as bitter, public, and emotional as the fallout between David Warner and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Warner was not merely a foreign player for SRH, he was the franchise’s identity for years. He remains the only captain to lead SRH to an IPL title, guiding them to glory in 2016 while also becoming one of the league’s most consistent batters. Yet, years after his exit, the relationship between Warner and the franchise continues to make headlines, with the latest controversy revolving around SRH allegedly blocking their only title-winning captain on Instagram.

Warner joined SRH in 2014 and almost instantly transformed the franchise. A year later, he became captain and ushered in the most successful era in the team’s history. Under his captaincy, SRH won the 2016 IPL title, the franchise’s only championship till date. Warner was not just their captain but also their batting backbone, winning multiple Orange Caps and consistently carrying the team to victory.

Beyond numbers, Warner built a rare emotional bond with Hyderabad fans. His Telugu reels, funny Instagram videos, and constant interactions with supporters made him feel less like an overseas player and more like one of their own. For many SRH supporters, Warner was the face of the franchise.

However, things began to fall apart during IPL 2021.

SRH endured a disastrous season, and midway through the season Warner was removed from the captaincy and was replaced by Kane Williamson. Soon after, he was also dropped from the playing XI altogether. The visuals shocked fans, Warner, once the franchise’s biggest superstar, was seen sitting alone in the stands rather than in the dugout with the team.

The exact reason behind the fallout has never been officially clarified, which is why speculation continues even today. Many reports and fan discussions suggested tensions between Warner and the management during the difficult 2021 season. Some supporters believe Warner publicly disagreed with team decisions, including selection calls, which may not have gone down well with the management and the owner.

Others feel the franchise simply wanted a leadership change after SRH’s poor performances. Warner himself later admitted that he was hurt by how things unfolded and said he was never clearly told why he was removed from captaincy.

The controversy only deepened after SRH released Warner ahead of the 2022 mega auction. Soon after, fans noticed that Warner appeared to have been blocked by the team on Instagram. The issue resurfaced again in late 2023 when Warner revealed that he could not access SRH’s profile while trying to congratulate Pat Cummins and Travis Head after the auction.

Now, in 2026, the controversy has surfaced once again.

Recently, Warner shared a screenshot on his Instagram story showing SRH’s account appearing as “private” to him. Something users typically see when they have been blocked. He even asked followers whether it was the official SRH account. Later, when a fan urged the franchise to unblock him, Warner sarcastically replied, “they would never unblock me,” before reposting it to his story.

That single Instagram story led to the entire debate online.

Fans immediately pointed out that Warner remains SRH’s only IPL-winning captain, making the situation feel even more bizarre. Social media platforms were flooded with reactions criticizing the franchise for allegedly blocking a player who delivered their greatest achievement. On cricket forums, supporters called Warner the “greatest SRH player ever” and questioned why the relationship still appears so strained years later.

At the same time, some fans believe there may be deeper issues behind the scenes that the public does not fully know about. A section of supporters argued that the fallout likely involved mistakes from both sides and that the tension clearly extends beyond cricketing decisions alone.

In a league where players frequently switch teams and franchises move on quickly, the David Warner–SRH saga continues to stand out because it never truly feels finished. From leading Sunrisers Hyderabad to their only IPL title to being dropped, released, and now blocked on social media, Warner’s journey with SRH has transformed from a success story into one of the IPL’s most talked about controversies. And perhaps that is why fans still cannot move on, because for Hyderabad supporters, David Warner was never just another foreign player in orange.
