On Sunday, badminton superstar P.V. Sindhu made every Indian proud after she became the first Indian shuttler to win the BWF World Championship. What made the victory even sweeter was that Sunday was Sindhu’s mother’s birthday — a fact which the Hyderabadi shuttler publicly acknowledged when she dedicated her historic win to her mother and the nation!

Mother P. Vijaya, who has herself been a National-level volleyball player, excitedly says, “It’s a proud moment for all of us. What more can I ask from the Almighty… My daughter has given me a wonderful birthday gift. I can only give my thanks to all the Gods for having given her the Badminton World Championship.”

She adds, “My prayers are always there with her. I always ask God for her wellbeing first. Everything else is secondary. At this moment, we are all very anxious to meet her but she will probably land in Hyderabad late tomorrow night.”

Praising her husband P.V. Ramana, also a National-level volleyball player, she says, “The sacrifices of Sindhu’s father and her coach Gopichand along with so many others who took care of her while she played the sport, has helped her reach this position. Of course, as a mother, I always ensured that she relished her favourite food at home. As parents, we took care of her daily needs and her practice. But it is Sindhu’s hard work and dedication that has put her on the top pedestal today.”

Vijaya adds, “As a child, she would never leave any stone unturned, be it with her studies or badminton. Her dedication and sincere work has today enabled her to bring home this World Championship. No doubt, it’s not an easy task. But even as a child, she would try to do everything with perfection.”

To celebrate her homecoming, the excited mother reveals that she is planning to cook Sindhu’s favourite dish — fish curry! But the celebrations will have to wait for some time as soon after landing, Sindhu is scheduled to go to the Pullela Gopichand Academy in Gachibowli to address a press meet.

But Sindhu’s mother is not complaining. “We are all happy and will wait for the right opportunity for Sindhu to be with us for an exclusive family celebration. I am a proud mother and am delighted that she has brought laurels to India and made her country proud. Of course, Sindhu is so busy that very often, we ourselves do not get much time to spend with our daughter,” she concludes with a smile.
