YELLOW ALERT: Gusty Winds, Lightning Likely Over The Coming Week
Premonsoon storms drench Hyderabad, monsoon nears Telangana
Hyderabad: Heavy evening thunderstorms swept across parts of Hyderabad on Saturday, bringing sharp bursts of rain, waterlogging and traffic snarls after another scorching day. Weather officials said the city is still in the pre monsoon phase, with the southwest monsoon expected to advance into Telangana in the coming days.
According to Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data, the highest rainfall was recorded in Serilingampally and western Hyderabad. Miyapur received 43.8 mm, Shaikpet 41.8 mm and Kukatpally’s CB CID Colony in Chandanagar circle 31.3 mm. Madhapur logged 29.8 mm, while Mehdipatnam and Golconda recorded 28.5 mm each.
The rain followed temperatures climbing close to 40°C in several parts of the city. Amberpet registered the highest at 39.8°C, while Chandrayangutta, Charminar, Rajendranagar, Mehdipatnam and Chandanagar also touched or approached the 40°C mark.
The sudden shift from hot afternoon conditions to intense evening storms led to slow moving traffic across western Hyderabad, particularly around the IT corridor, Madhapur, Gachibowli, Kukatpally, Miyapur and Jubilee Hills, where rain coincided with weekend travel.
TGDPS data showed Karwan recorded the highest cumulative average rainfall among GHMC circles at 19.7 mm, followed by Mehdipatnam at 19.5 mm and Jubilee Hills at 17.9 mm.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Hyderabad is currently experiencing pre monsoon thunderstorms rather than monsoon rainfall. Conditions remain favourable for the further advance of the southwest monsoon into parts of Telangana over the next two to three days.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at several places across Telangana over the coming week, accompanied by gusty winds of 40–50 kmph and lightning. Maximum temperatures are expected to fall gradually by 2°C to 3°C during the next four days. Hyderabad, Rangareddy and Medchal Malkajgiri remain under yellow thunderstorm warnings.
Weather bloggers said conditions are becoming favourable for monsoon onset over Telangana, including Hyderabad, around June 11–13. Until then, residents can expect a familiar pattern of intense daytime heat followed by evening thunderstorms.
