Nalgonda: A woman killed another woman and her six-month-old son by setting them on fire at Kethepally in Nampally mandal on Saturday. The woman died on the spot, while the infant succumbed to severe burn injuries while undergoing treatment.
The six-month-old boy, who suffered about 80 per cent burn injuries, was initially shifted for treatment and later referred to Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad, where he succumbed to his injuries.
According to locals, Kudelu Mamatha, 35, wife of Nagesh, was holding her six-month-old son on the premises of her house in the village when another woman, Sujatha, allegedly barged in and set them on fire after pouring petrol on them. Police said Sujatha had come to the house carrying chilli powder, a knife and a bottle of petrol, with the intention of killing Mamatha.
After entering the house, Sujatha, who allegedly had an extra-marital relationship with Nagesh, picked up a heated argument with Mamatha and then poured petrol on her and the infant before setting them ablaze. As the fire spread, Mamatha ran onto the street screaming for help, but collapsed and died on the spot.
Nagesh was not present at the house at the time of the incident. Nampally sub-inspector Linga Reddy said the attack was suspected to have been carried out to eliminate Mamatha, whom Sujatha allegedly viewed as an obstacle to her relationship with Nagesh. He added that disputes had earlier taken place between the two women over the issue.
Police sources said that after the incident, Sujatha went to the Nampally police station and surrendered. A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.
