Nizamabad: To protect standing crops, irrigation department officials released water from the Nizamsagar Project and Pocharam Reservoir. Facing a dry spell, farmers growing paddy, maize, and other crops had urged the state government to release water from major and medium irrigation projects in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts.

After assessing conditions on the ground, officials decided to open the reservoirs. As of Wednesday, Nizamsagar stood at 1,391.20 feet against its full reservoir level of 1,405.00 feet, with 4.571 TMC ft of storage available. By comparison, on the same date last year, the water level was 1,389.55 feet with 3.8 TMC ft in storage. Beginning Tuesday, the project has been releasing around 600 cusecs into its main canal.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Nizamsagar Project assistant executive engineer Saketh said supplies would continue as directed by senior officials to meet farmers’ needs in Kamareddy and Nizamabad districts.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, irrigation officials also released water from Pocharam Reservoir on the Kamareddy-Medak border. Present at the event were Yellareddy revenue divisional officer Parthasarathi Reddy, irrigation department in-charge superintending engineer Mallesh, and Agriculture Market Committee chairperson Rajitha Reddy.

The district administration is closely monitoring reservoir levels and has submitted requirement details to the state government to ensure further releases as needed.
