Hyderabad: Rajendranagar police are probing whether a tanker operator accused of illegally drawing water from the Himayatsagar catchment area extracted groundwater far beyond the quantity permitted under an official no objection certificate (NOC) submitted during the investigation.

The operator had submitted the permission document to extract only 25,000 litres of groundwater per day, while authorities had earlier alleged that nearly one lakh litres were being drawn daily for commercial tanker operations, which is four times the sanctioned limit.

According to the NOC issued by the groundwater department, Rangareddy district, the operator has been granted permission for 25 cubic metres (25,000 litres) of groundwater extraction per day from an existing borewell located in Himayatsagar village for the purpose of bulk water supply. The certificate, issued under the regularisation category for an existing borewell, is valid from March 6, 2026, to March 5, 2029.

The document further permits a maximum annual groundwater extraction of 9,125 cubic metres, equivalent to over 91 lakh litres per year, and pertains to one borewell with a depth of 100 metres.
