Water Board’s drive reduces sewage overflows in Hyderabad
Over six months, HMWS&SB cleaned 3,185 km of sewer pipelines and 2.5 lakh manholes across 24,146 areas
Hyderabad: The HMWS&SB has completed a 180-day special drive to reduce sewage overflows in the city. Launched on October 2, 2024, the initiative was planned for 90 days but was extended by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for another 90 days after the drive showed positive results.
Over six months, HMWS&SB cleaned 3,185 km of sewer pipelines and 2.5 lakh manholes across 24,146 areas. This effort led to a 20-30 per cent drop in daily sewage complaints, significantly improving sanitation across the city.
Board managing director Ashok Reddy commended the dedication of staff and officials, assuring that all remaining manholes would be cleared by June to further improve the city’s sewage system.
Before launching the drive, HMWS&SB analysed sewage complaints from the past three years and found that 60 per cent of issues stemmed from blocked household drains and overflowing sewage on roads. By targeting these key problem areas, the initiative has resolved long-standing sewage issues, contributing to a cleaner Hyderabad.
