Hyderabad:Prof. T.P. Radhakrishnan, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry at the University of Hyderabad (UoH), has been appointed to the department of atomic energy’s Raja Ramanna Chair for a three-year term. The chair is awarded to accomplished scientists to enable advanced research and mentoring in areas linked to atomic energy and basic sciences, and will be held at the UoH during the tenure.
Prof. Radhakrishnan has been associated with the School of Chemistry since 1989, in teaching, research and student mentorship roles. His work has focused on physical and materials chemistry, with sustained contributions to molecular functional materials and nanocomposite thin films. Concepts and experimental approaches developed by his research group have been adopted by researchers working in related areas.
According to the university, he has taught and mentored students at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels, contributing to the training of multiple cohorts of chemists. His textbook, ‘Core Concepts for a Course on Materials Chemistry’, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2022, is used by students and teachers working at the interface of chemistry and materials science.
Prof. Radhakrishnan is a Fellow of all major Indian science academies, the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and the Asia-Pacific Academy of Sciences. His honours include the Swarnajayanti Fellowship, Ramanna Fellowship, J.C. Bose National Fellowship, and the bronze and silver medals of the Chemical Research Society of India. He has also served as associate editor of the journals ‘Resonance’ and ‘Journal of Chemical Sciences’ of the Indian Academy of Sciences, and as advisory board member of Materials Chemistry Frontiers.
The Department of Atomic Energy instituted the Raja Ramanna Chair to retain the expertise of senior scientists within universities and research institutions.
