Untimely Rains Damage Paddy, Farmers Seek Compensation

NIZAMABAD: Untimely rain over four days has damaged paddy and other crops in Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts. The rainfall was recorded at 408.3 mm in Nizamabad district on Saturday. Of 33 mandals, 21 mandals received excess rainfall and 12 mandals got normal rainfall. Farmers urged the state government for compensate them for the loss of their harvest.

Some farmers had kept their paddy in agriculture fields for drying and a few others had taken it to the procurement centres. The rain soaked all the paddy. Farmers tried to cover up the paddy with plastic covers, but were unable to protect it fully.

Citing higher moisture content in paddy, purchasers were offering lower prices. The situation was so bad that the paddy was seen sprouting in some places.

On the other hand, bajra crops were damaged at various places. The agriculture and meteorological department officials are expecting sufficient rainfall in both the districts.

BRS Balkonda MLA Vemula Prashanth Reddy on Saturday demanded that the state government should pay compensation to the farmers. He urged civil supplies minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy for action against rice millers for deductions under various heads in paddy weighment in Nizamabad district.
