HYDERABAD: The Telangana Save Education Committee (TSEC) has asked Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to withdraw his reported statement that the number of government schools would be reduced from 27,000 to 4,000. It warned that closure of 23,000 schools would hurt children and increase dropouts.

The committee also sought 20 per cent of the state budget for public education, permanent appointments, facilities in schools and regulation of private education. Committee general secretary, Prof. G. Haragopal said, “Every village should have a government school.”

The TSEC announced a campaign from June 20 to July 15, when memoranda would be submitted to public representatives, in addition to holding district round-table meetings. “We will also write an open letter with 100 plus signatures of prominent individuals including retired judges, VCs, professors and educationists. Education is a fundamental right. If 23,000 schools are closed 9,000 villages will be without schools. This is not acceptable,” said Prof. K. Lakshminarayana.
