Congress has conducted a comprehensive exercise to prepare the list of probable candidates for the upcoming Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections.
Hyderabad: The Congress has conducted a comprehensive exercise to prepare the list of probable candidates for the upcoming Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections.
Party sources said three names have been recommended for each of the 565 ZPTC seats, from which the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) will select one and issue the B-form to contest. In total, 1,695 aspirants have been shortlisted. Nominations for the first phase of the ZPTC elections will begin on October 9.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on September 30 directed ministers and District Congress Committee (DCC) leaders to complete proposals for ZPTC seats by October 5 after holding consultations with MPs, MLAs, MLCs and key party functionaries. Each minister was asked to recommend at least three eligible names per ZPTC seat. The final list of candidates is expected to be released by the TPCC on October 6 and 7.
During a virtual meeting on September 30 with TPCC president B Mahesh Kumar Goud, AICC in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan and Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, the Chief Minister reiterated that only deserving candidates should be proposed and urged the ministers to avoid errors while shortlisting names, stressing that the goal must be victory in every constituency.

The Telangana State Election Commission (TGSEC) had on September 29 announced a two-phase schedule for the MPTC and ZPTC polls. The phase-1 nominations will be accepted from October 9 to 11, scrutiny will be held on October 12 and polling will take place on October 23. For phase 2, nominations will be received from October 13 to 15, scrutiny is on October 16 and polling is scheduled for October 27. Counting of votes for both phases will be held on November 11.
The term of existing ZPTCs and MPTCs ended in June 2024 but elections were delayed. The Congress government issued GO 9 on September 28 increasing reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) to 42 per cent in local bodies. This has been challenged in the Telangana High Court, which will hear the case on October 8. The outcome may impact the final implementation of the BC quota although the Election Commission has already issued the poll notification.
