Three-year-old Mauled by Stray Dogs in Attapur
The child sustained deep facial wounds and was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors administered 18 stitches.
Hyderabad:A three-year-old girl was grievously injured after being attacked by a pack of stray dogs while playing outside her home in Vasudeva Reddy Nagar Colony, Attapur, on Sunday.
The child sustained deep facial wounds and was rushed to a nearby private hospital, where doctors administered 18 stitches. Her condition is reported to be stable, though she remains under observation.
Her father told reporters that the family had no choice but to seek immediate treatment at a private facility, adding that the medical expenses were proving difficult to bear.
Following the incident, residents of Vasudeva Reddy Nagar Colony staged a protest outside the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) office, alleging that repeated complaints about stray dogs in the locality had gone unheeded. They said packs of dogs roam freely, particularly in the early mornings and evenings, posing a threat to children and the elderly.
This attack adds to a grim list of similar incidents reported from Hyderabad and across Telangana in recent years.
The Supreme Court has reiterated that public safety, especially of vulnerable groups such as children and senior citizens, cannot be compromised in the name of stray dog management. The apex court has directed civic bodies to implement animal birth control and anti-rabies vaccination programmes effectively, and to respond promptly to complaints from residential areas.
In its recent orders, the court also stressed that stray dogs must be prevented from frequenting sensitive zones such as schools, hospitals and densely populated colonies, and emphasised relocation to shelters rather than release in the same locality.
A senior GHMC official said the civic body was implementing the Supreme Court’s directions “in letter and spirit”. The measures include identification of institutional areas, appointment of nodal officers, and strengthening of animal birth control and vaccination drives. The GHMC commissioner has also written to the Health Department seeking adequate stocks of anti-rabies vaccines and immunoglobulins in government and private hospitals. The official added that the Attapur incident would be verified once details of the exact location were received, and action would follow.
