Hyderabad: The Telangana Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports, including the one published by Deccan Chronicle, highlighting a food poisoning incident in a residential school in Nagarkurnool district affecting over 100 students.

The commission on Monday said that the reports highlight 'disturbing incidents of food poisoning and unhygienic conditions at the Mahatma Jyothiba Pule BC Welfare Gurukul School located near Uyyalawada, Nagarkurnool district, where 111 intermediate students are said to have fallen ill after consuming dinner on the night of July 26, 2025.

The students reportedly suffered from stomach pain and vomiting, and were subsequently shifted to the Nagarkurnool government Hospital.'

The commission has directed the Chief Secretary to submit a comprehensive report covering aspects such as the present health status and medical treatment provided to the affected students; inquiry reports, if any, conducted by district or departmental authorities; action taken against any officers or staff responsible for negligence or misconduct and preventive measures instituted to ensure food safety, hygiene, and effective monitoring in all government hostels.

"If the allegations raised in the news reports are found to be true, the same amounts to a violation of the fundamental rights to life, health, safety, dignity, and protection from exploitation guaranteed under Articles 21 and 21A of the Constitution of India, as well as international human rights principles relating to child welfare and the right to adequate food, particularly for children belonging to marginalised and tribal communities," the Commission said.
