Hyderabad:Thousands of Shia Muslims participated in Muharram processions in Hyderabad on the 10th day of Muharram, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain at the Battle of Karbala.

The main procession began from Bibi Ka Alam at Biwi ka Alawa in Dabeerpura, continuing a centuries-old tradition in which the sacred Alam is mounted on an elephant. The observance is marked by mourning, prayers, charity and distribution of food and beverages, with participants dressed in black as a symbol of grief.

After Zohar prayers, the procession moved through Yakutpura, Alijah Kotla, Charminar, Gulzar Houz, Mir Chowk, Miralam Mandi, Zehranagar, Darul Shifa and Imliban before concluding at Chaderghat. Devotees took part in ‘matam’ and raised religious slogans during the procession.

At Charminar, city police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar paid respects to the Alam.

Waqf Board chairman Azmatullah Hussaini said, “The state government made all arrangements for Muharram, including the elephant procession, on the instructions of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.”
