CM Revanth Reddy Distributes Cheques to the Kin of the Victims
The People’s Government stand by families of the deceased in Medina bus crash
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said that the state government would extend support to the families of those who died in the Medina bus tragedy in Saudi Arabia in November last year. The government could have sent the ex gratia cheques directly to the homes of the affected families but he had convened the meeting at the Secretariat to personally assure them of support during the difficult period.
The Chief Minister distributed the ex gratia cheques of ₹5 lakh to the families of each of the 44 deceased victims and ₹3 lakh to Mohd, Abdul Shoaib who survived with injuries. The Chief Minister said the assistance was being provided on humanitarian grounds, speaking at an event at the Secretariat. “This government is yours and has always supported people in difficult times,” he said.
He noted that states do not ordinarily pay compensation to the families of those who die in accidents outside the country but the Telangana government had come forward to assist the Saudi bus mishap victim families.
Recalling the government's immediate response after the incident, Revanth Reddy said a delegation led by minority welfare minister Mohd Azaruddin was deputed to Medina and arrangements made to send family members to the spot. With the coordination of the Indian Consulate and the Saudi government, the last rites of the deceased were performed at Jannatul Baqi, he noted.
The Chief Minister also referred to his association with the Muslim community, stating that since 2009 he had been sponsoring five persons, one each from five mandals of his Kodangal Assembly constituency, for the Haj pilgrimage every year at his own expense. The selection of Haj pilgrims was entrusted to local religious leaders, he said.
Minister Azharuddin, Chief Minister’s adviser Vem Narender Reddy, government adviser Mohd Ali Shabbir, Nampally MLA Majid Hussain, Haj Committee chairman Khusro Pasha, Telangana Minorities Residential Educational Institutions Society (TGMREIS) vice-chairman Fahim Qureshi, State Minority Finance Corporation chairman Obedullah Kotwal and the CM’s officer on special duty Vemula Srinivas were present.
