TGPCB Monitors Hussainsagar Water Quality Before and After Immersion

Hyderabad: The Telangana Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) undertook water quality monitoring of Hussain Sagar in connection with the Vinayaka Chaturthi festival.
As per the monitoring schedule prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), water samples were collected from six locations in Hussainsagar at three stages — before, during and after idol immersion — and analysed for various water quality parameters.
Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations were held on 14 September 2026. Accordingly, TGPCB collected water samples on 11 September, before immersion; on 17, 19, 21 and 23 September, during the immersion period; and on 28 September, after immersion, and conducted water quality tests.
Monitoring was carried out at the following six locations in Hussainsagar - Opposite NTR Park, Platform No. 1, Opposite NTR Park, Platform No. 2, Lumbini Park, Necklace Road, Lepakshi Handicrafts and Buddha Statue (midstream)- control point.
The analysis revealed an increase in turbidity levels at all six monitoring locations in Hussainsagar during Ganesh idol immersion. Although the levels declined after immersion, they did not return to the pre-immersion levels. The highest turbidity level of 200 NTU was recorded at Necklace Road during the immersion period.
Total Suspended Solids (TSS) levels increased at all monitoring locations during the immersion period. Although a decline was observed after immersion, the levels did not return to the pre-immersion levels.
The highest TSS concentration of 99 mg/L was recorded at Platform No. 1, opposite NTR Park, during the immersion period.
The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) levels increased significantly at all monitoring locations during the immersion period. The highest COD concentration of 164 mg/L was recorded at Necklace Road. Even after immersion, COD levels at all locations did not return to their pre-immersion levels.
The water quality analysis revealed an increase in Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels at all monitoring locations during and after the immersion period.
The total Coliform levels increased significantly at all locations during the immersion period. After immersion, a decline was observed at three locations — Necklace Road, Lepakshi Handicrafts and near the Buddha Statue.
At Lumbini Park, the elevated Coliform levels observed during immersion returned to the pre-immersion levels after immersion.
However, at Platforms No. 1 and 2 opposite NTR Park, the elevated levels observed during immersion continued even after immersion, with no reduction compared to the levels recorded before immersion.
The Faecal Coliform levels increased significantly during the immersion period at four locations — Platforms No. 1 and 2 opposite NTR Park, Necklace Road and near the Buddha Statue. Although a decline was observed after immersion, the levels did not return to the pre-immersion levels.
At Lumbini Park, Faecal Coliform levels increased further after immersion compared to the levels recorded before immersion. At Lepakshi Handicrafts, Total Coliform levels increased during immersion and continued at the same elevated level even after immersion, compared to the pre-immersion levels.
The analysis revealed that there were no significant changes in Dissolved Oxygen (DO) levels in Hussainsagar due to Ganesh idol immersion. Rainfall on 14, 19, 20 and 22 September resulted in rainwater runoff from the catchment areas entering Hussainsagar.
In this context, variations were observed in certain water quality parameters, including COD, BOD and Hardness.
The TGPCB stated that it continues to undertake scientific testing and analysis as part of its efforts to protect water resources and monitor water quality. The Board appealed to the public, concerned departments and festival organisers to extend their cooperation in safeguarding the environment.
