HYDERABAD: Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGNPDCL) on Tuesday technically charged its first indoor 33/11 kV substation at Telangana Chowk in Karimnagar, marking a major step toward overcoming urban space constraints while ensuring reliable power supply.

Northern discom chairman and managing director Karnati Varun Reddy, who inaugurated the facility, said the modern substation was constructed at a cost of ₹6.92 crore within just 484 square yards. He stated that indoor substations would significantly help address acute land shortage in urban areas while delivering quality and uninterrupted power to consumers.

The ground floor houses the control room with modern switchgear panels, while the first floor accommodates the sub-division and section offices. The substation receives 33 kV power from the 132 kV Vavilalapalli and Padmanagar substations, with an additional 33 kV feeder kept ready for future expansion.

Initially, power would be supplied through six 11 kV feeders, with provision for two more feeders to meet growing demand. The commissioning will reduce electrical load on the existing SRR, Bhagatnagar and Saptagiri substations, improving overall supply capacity and reliability in Karimnagar city.

The facility is equipped with two 8 MVA power transformers using ester-oil technology, which offers higher flash point, enhanced safety and better fire risk control. Its higher moisture tolerance improves transformer insulation life and enables efficient handling of higher temperatures and increased loads, reducing long-term maintenance costs.

Control panels feature SCADA facilities, IED relays and advanced RTU systems integrated with TGNPDCL’s Corporate Office Control Centre, enabling remote monitoring and quicker restoration during interruptions.

Varun Reddy announced that another indoor substation would be established at the Karimnagar collectorate, with provisions for future capacity expansion. He also reviewed progress of similar projects in Nizamabad, Hanamkonda, Kamareddy and Khammam circles, expressing confidence that indoor substations would significantly reduce power interruptions and improve supply quality in urban areas.

Northern discom directors V. Mohan Rao and T. Madhusudhan and chief engineers K. Tirumala Rao, Surender and Annapurna were present.
