The Yadadri Thermal Power Plant (YTPS) is being prepared to produce 140 million units (MU) of electricity every day. Yadadri project started in 2017 but work stopped because of a case in the National Green Tribunal and the previous BRS government could not get the issues resolved.

After the Congress came to power, the government secured environmental clearance in February 2024, and a public hearing was held successfully on February 20 of that year. The revised environmental clearance was secured on May 7, 2024, and construction work resumed after 19 months.

The boiler light-up for Unit-1 and Unit-2 was done on May 14, 2024. Unit-2 was connected to the power grid for the first time on September 12, 2024, and Unit-1 on November 3. The first coal train (rake) to reach the plant was flagged off on the same day. With the YTPS generating power, remaining work is expected to be completed in the next six months to take the plant to its full capacity.

The government has also increased coal storage for the plant. It also started sending two coal trains every day from Naini coal mines to ensure quality coal was available at the YTPS. The government has also started steps to bring good quality coal from the Mahanadi Coalfields.

Work on the Bhadradri project started in 2015 and should have been completed in three years but took until 2022, almost seven years. Even after all four units started commercial production in 2022, there were problems in the coal handling plant and main plant which affected production. After addressing the issues, the plant crossed 80 per cent plant load factor for the first time in 2025-26.

TG Generation Corporation’s (Genco) thermal power capacity, 4,042.5 MW in December 2023, has reached 7,180 MW; its total thermal power production stands at 78.88 MU now against 69.71 MU per day on average in 2022–23. In the beginning of 2026–27, daily average thermal power production reached a high of 90.23 MU.
