NIZAMABAD: For the first time, Telangana will observe National Road Safety Month from January 1 to 31 across all districts. The month-long programme is being conducted nationwide as part of an initiative of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to raise awareness and reduce road accidents. Several preparatory meetings have been held by State and district authorities to plan and coordinate related activities.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Motor Vehicle Inspector Enagandla Rahul Kumar of the transport department said awareness programmes would be conducted in both rural and urban areas of the district. He said the Centre and the State were jointly implementing these initiatives to bring down road accidents.

A District Road Safety Committee meeting was held on Saturday under the chairmanship of collector T. Vinay Krishna Reddy at the Integrated District Offices complex. Officials from the National Highways Authority, Roads and Buildings, Transport Department, RTC, Panchayat Raj, Electricity, Medical and Health, and Municipal departments, along with Road Safety Committee members and Red Cross representatives, attended the meeting.

The meeting discussed accident-prone locations and the reasons behind frequent road mishaps, and adopted key resolutions. Stressing the need for inter-departmental coordination, the Collector said officials of all line departments must work collectively to curb road accidents.

He directed officials to ensure effective monitoring with a strong focus on public outreach. He also called for extensive awareness campaigns on the dangers of overspeeding, drunk driving, and riding or driving without helmets or seat belts. These campaigns will be carried out through hoardings, cinema slides, social media, FM radio, local television channels, digital displays and other media, targeting students, drivers and the general public.

The Collector instructed officials to take immediate corrective measures at identified accident black spots. He said the causes of every accident must be thoroughly analysed to prevent recurrence. He also directed the removal of road encroachments, repair of potholes and uneven surfaces, installation of barricades, and provision of adequate lighting at junctions through high-mast lights, especially during night hours. He urged officials to work with dedication to make Nizamabad an accident-free district.

Meanwhile, similar high-level review meetings have been held in Telangana and other States to plan the month-long campaign. District Road Safety Committees across the country are formulating local action plans, identifying black spots and ensuring coordination among departments in line with national guidelines.
