Telangana Promotes Rooftop Solar for Every Household
TGSPDCL has taken several measures to simplify the rooftop solar installation process
Hyderabad: The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) has appealed to domestic electricity consumers to install rooftop solar systems at their homes to reduce electricity bills and contribute to environmental protection.
The Central Government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) provides Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to eligible domestic consumers. TGSPDCL stated that increased adoption of solar energy would promote clean energy usage while providing consumers with an opportunity to reduce their electricity expenses.
Under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, eligible domestic consumers can receive a maximum Central subsidy of Rs.78,000 for installing a rooftop solar system with a capacity of 3 kWp. Financial assistance is provided at Rs.30,000 per kW for the first 2 kWp and Rs.18,000 per kW for the additional 1 kWp. No additional Central subsidy is available for capacity exceeding three kWp.
Consumers must comply with the scheme’s eligibility criteria and technical standards to qualify for the subsidy. Financial assistance is also available, subject to the prescribed guidelines, for rooftop solar installations undertaken by Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations (GHS/RWAs) to meet the electricity requirements of common facilities, including electric vehicle (EV) charging.
Assistance is provided at Rs.18,000 per kW for capacities up to 500 kWp, subject to the prescribed limit of 3 kWp per household. To qualify for the subsidy, installations must comply with the scheme’s requirements, including the Domestic Content Requirement (DCR), which mandates the use of solar modules manufactured using domestically produced solar cells.
Consumers can apply through the official PM Surya Ghar website: https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in. They must first register on the portal using their mobile number and electricity connection details, select the concerned electricity distribution company, and submit the application.
After obtaining the necessary approvals, consumers should install the rooftop solar system through a vendor registered under the scheme. They must then complete the prescribed net-metering, inspection and commissioning procedures and submit the required details on the portal.
Following verification of eligibility and completion of the prescribed formalities, the subsidy will be credited directly to the beneficiary’s bank account, in accordance with the scheme guidelines.
TGSPDCL has taken several measures to simplify the rooftop solar installation process. The company has integrated its portal with PM Surya Ghar Portal 2.0. It has implemented exemptions from technical feasibility studies for systems up to 10 kWp and automatic load enhancement, in accordance with the applicable provisions.
The inspection process has been streamlined to facilitate faster installations, and load enhancement charges can be collected through subsequent electricity bills. Applicable exemptions from the submission of prescribed documents, including the net-metering agreement, have also been implemented.
An application fee exemption is available for systems up to 10 kWp for applications registered between June 22 2026 and March 31 2027, subject to the applicable conditions. TGSPDCL also conducts meetings with solar vendors, TGREDCO and REC officials on the first Wednesday of every month to review implementation and resolve issues related to the scheme.
Progress of Solar Energy Programmes under TGSPDCL
As of October 9, TGSPDCL recorded 30,259 registrations under the net-metering category, with 29,777 systems installed and a capacity of 640.852 MW. Under PM Surya Ghar, 44,662 registrations were recorded, with 29,816 systems installed and a capacity of 125.613 MW.
Under the Model Solar Village programme, 4,335 registrations were recorded, with 3,190 installations and a capacity of 6.407 MW. Under PM-KUSUM Component-A, 720 Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) were recorded, with 35 installations and a capacity of 59 MW.
According to TGSPDCL data, the combined figures across these categories stood at 79,976 registrations, 62,818 installations and a total capacity of 831.872 MW.
TGSPDCL CMD Jitesh V. Patil urged eligible domestic consumers to make full use of the Central subsidy available under the PM Surya Ghar scheme and install rooftop solar systems at their homes.
He stated, “TGSPDCL is continuously taking measures to create awareness about the scheme and simplify the application process. Every domestic consumer should become a partner in promoting clean energy while reducing the burden of electricity bills.”
