Telangana Launches Urban Climate Atlas
Digital Platform To Map Climate Risks, Vulnerabilities And Support Urban Planning
Telangana on Thursday launched the Urban Climate Atlas, a digital, map-based platform to provide Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) with data on climate risks and vulnerabilities and support climate-responsive urban planning. The atlas was launched as part of the State Climate Centre for Cities, established under the City Investments to Innovate, Integrate and Sustain (CITIIS) Programme 2.0. Officials of the commissioner and director of municipal administration (CDMA) said the initiative would support sustainable development across ULBs in the state.
The State Climate Centre for Cities, established at the CDMA office in Masab Tank, was inaugurated by municipal administration and urban development secretary Dr T.K. Sreedevi. The Centre will serve as the state’s nodal knowledge, data and technical-support platform for municipal climate action.
Its mandate includes climate-data management, greenhouse gas emissions, climate-risk and vulnerability assessments, including heat islands and urban flooding, climate action planning and capacity building. It will also facilitate integration of climate considerations into urban policies, infrastructure projects and municipal decision-making.
The Centre will support preparation of climate action plans for ULBs and consolidate them into an Integrated State Climate Action Plan. The Urban Climate Atlas will bring together spatial data on climate risks, vulnerabilities, emissions and urban services. It will enable municipal officials to identify vulnerable areas, prioritise investments and develop locally appropriate climate measures.
The Atlas will also support climate-responsive budgeting by helping ULBs identify climate-related expenditure and align proposed investments with state and city climate priorities.
“The Telangana Urban Climate Atlas will help convert climate data into practical municipal action, enabling cities to identify vulnerable areas, prioritise resilient investments and strengthen public services,” said Dr Sreedevi. “It will help in mapping risks, strengthening cities and building a climate-resilient Telangana,” she added.
