Hyderabad: The intermediate education department said its initiatives had led to an increase of over 10,000 students in government junior colleges. The 430 government junior colleges recorded 94,155 enrolments as against 83,844 last year. The department had set a target of 1,47,588 admissions. An official said this came despite up gradation of KGBVs till intermediate, and model schools and welfare schools offering intermediate education.

The department is also planning to hold a mega parent-teacher meeting from August to discuss student progress and reduce dropouts.

Much before the public examinations that were held in March this year, the department had constituted district-wise academic monitoring cells with three officers to enhance admissions.

The officers were entrusted with the task of enrolling students, particularly from the government feeder schools located in the area, into respective colleges.

In addition, the staff created awareness about the 90-day plan, which was introduced before exams that led to a 10 per cent increase in results for the first time since the state’s formation. They stressed about free coaching being extended to students in government junior colleges to appear for the Eapcet, JEE and NEET.

An official said that starting this academic year, the colleges are also offering yoga and meditation classes in addition to the regular academics. "They have been included in the time-table so to help students beat the stress," he said.

Further, special officers were appointed to understand the issue of students, with department of intermediate education director S. Krishna Aditya holding regular review meetings. The officials visited remotest villages in Adilabad, Kommuram Bheem Asifabad, Mulugu to understand students’ needs and accordingly designed an admission drive plan. The department is also planning to hold a mega parent-teacher meeting from August to discuss student progress and reduce dropouts.
