Telangana HC to Hear Writ Pleas on GHMC Ward Delimitation
The court is expected to take up the matter for detailed hearing later in the afternoon
Hyderabad: Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy of the Telangana High Court on Monday granted permission to hear around 80 writ petitions in the afternoon session, all relating to the delimitation of wards following the proposed merger of surrounding areas into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
The batch of petitions challenges the ward delimitation exercise in the context of the GHMC’s proposed expansion from its existing 650 square kilometres to over 2,000 square kilometres after the merger.
Earlier, the High Court had directed the state government to publish ward-wise maps and population details to enable affected residents to file meaningful objections. However, the state government challenged this direction in appeal, arguing that although only four parties were aggrieved in the original case, the court’s directions were general in nature and therefore legally untenable.
Following the appeal, more than 80 writ petitions were filed by aggrieved residents and mentioned as a lunch motion when the court assembled on Monday morning.
The court is expected to take up the matter for detailed hearing later in the afternoon.
