Hyderabad: In a bid to curb illegal sand mining, the Telangana Mineral Development Corporation (TGMDC) has announced plans to expand sand bazaars across the state, following inputs from Vigilance and Enforcement officials. The move aims to ensure steady sand availability during the rainy season and prevent black‑market operations.

According to TGMDC officials, advance bookings for sand from June to October 2026 are now open. The corporation intends to supply quality sand at affordable rates, fixing the price at Rs 1,450 per metric tonne (MT). This initiative is designed to discourage consumers from resorting to illegal suppliers charging exorbitant amounts.

Recent joint raids by V&D and mines department officers revealed rampant violations. At Birkur, vehicles were found transporting sand even after beaches had closed for the night. In Kamareddy district, vehicles were seized at Madnur police limits, while in Medak six vehicles were caught overspeeding and illegally carrying sand from Papannapet.

To meet seasonal demand, bulk bookings for coarse sand are available at Bowrampet, Vattinagulapally, Adibatla, and Abdullapurmet sand bazaars. Applications can be submitted online between January 8 and January 18, with dispatches scheduled from June to October last.

Officials added that, apart from the four existing bazaars, additional stockyards will be set up near Hyderabad to ensure continuous supply. Consumers can book quantities ranging from 32 MT to 5,000 MT. While coarse sand was priced at Rs 1,600 per MT in 2025, the advance booking scheme offers it at a reduced rate of Rs 1,450 for 2026.

The decision follows reports of miscreants smuggling sand from closed reaches and selling it at inflated prices. By expanding official supply channels, TGMDC hopes to check illegal transport and stabilise the market.
