Telangana Govt Committed to Preserving Ancient Buddhist Sites: Jupally
With CSR funds from Telangana GenCo (VYTPS), Rs.1.60 crore will be spent on the conservation of Phanigiri Buddhist structures, and Rs 23 lakh for the protection of Gajulabanda structures
Hyderabad: The State government is working to preserve the ancient Buddhist heritage wealth in Telangana, said Tourism, Culture, and Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao.
He along with MLA Mandula Samuel laid the foundation stone on Monday for conservation and restoration works at the Phanigiri and Gajulabanda buddhist sites in Nagaram Mandal, Suryapet district.
With CSR funds from Telangana GenCo (VYTPS), Rs.1.60 crore will be spent on the conservation of Phanigiri Buddhist structures, and Rs 23 lakh for the protection of Gajulabanda structures.
Phanigiri is one of the most significant Buddhist heritage centers in South India, the minister noted. He stated that Buddhism stands as a symbol of peace, non-violence, and humanitarian values, and it is the government's responsibility to pass on such historical heritage to future generations.
The State government is giving special priority to the preservation of historical, archaeological, and heritage assets, he added.
The Minister informed that measures are being taken to position Telangana more prominently on the national and international Buddhist tourism map through the development of Buddhist sites like Phanigiri and Gajulabanda. Sculptures, inscriptions, and coins unearthed from excavations are showcasing Telangana's historical glory to the world, he said.
With an increase in tourist footfall, employment opportunities for local youth and new avenues for rural economic development will open up, he pointed out.
Responding to MLA Samuel's request, the Minister announced an allocation of Rs 5 crore for the comprehensive development of the Phanigiri Buddhist site. With these funds, he said improvements will be made to the approach road from the main highway to the site, construction of a stepped pathway up the hill, provision of tourist infrastructure facilities, and enhancement of visitor amenities.
