Hyderabad: Tangled wires — whether lying on the road or hanging overhead — have added to the monsoon woes, with commuters calling them “death traps.”
These wires pose a serious concern for car users, heavy vehicle drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, and everyone using the roads. It’s not only the cables lying on the ground or hanging dangerously; even the bundles of wires tied to electricity poles are hazardous, people said.
A quick check revealed that some wires were hanging as low as six feet at many places. There have also been instances where bundles hanging from electricity poles fell during rains accompanied by gusty winds.
Most of these cables have been set up by Internet service providers, cable TV operators, and telecom companies.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, pedestrians said they feel more vulnerable, while car and motorcycle riders pointed out that they too face equal risk.
The common concern was that waterlogged roads often conceal these cables. Rains accompanied by strong winds frequently result in uprooted trees and branches, which bring down cables along with them.
Begumpet, Panjagutta, Uppal, and Road No. 5 in Jubilee Hills are among dozens of places where hanging wires were noted frequently.
At Begumpet, thick cables were found lying across the central median, while in Panjagutta, a portion of wire was spotted on the road near a commercial establishment.
It’s not just the main roads — the condition of bylanes is equally bad, and the situation in crowded markets like Koti, Begum Bazar, and Monda Market is even worse.
“These wires and cables are not visible during rains when the roads are waterlogged, which is one of the biggest challenges I face while riding. Even if these wires do not carry electricity, they are still dangerous as there is always the risk of my bike skidding,” said B. Manohar, an employee with an IT company.
According to officials of the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL), Internet service providers and cable TV operators have already been issued warnings.
