Supplies Stalled Under New Contract, Meal System in Gurukuls Hit: SFI
The organisation asked the government to immediately review the situation and maintain uninterrupted supply of essential items to Gurukuls and welfare hostels.
Hyderabad:Supplies of 88 essential items to Gurukuls and welfare institutions through a new contractor have not begun despite the September 1 start date, which has forced authorities to continue procurement under the old system for the month, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) Telangana said on Monday.
More than 9 lakh students in Gurukuls, Ashram schools, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, Eklavya schools and welfare hostels depend on these supplies for their meals, the SFI said and accused the government of introducing a centralised contract system without adequate advance planning.
“The delay in supply will directly affect students’ meals,” the SFI said, and questioned why alternative arrangements became necessary soon after the new system was introduced. It added that dependence on contracting agencies for such a large student meal system could create similar problems in future if supplies were delayed. “Students should not be made to suffer because of problems in the management of contracts.”
