Hyderabad: The state government has appointed IAS officers to head at least half of the 12 zones in the extended GHMC, as against the previous BRS government which ignored the rule by appointing only one all-India service official for heading only one out of the erstwhile six zones.

“We are following all the norms related to zonal and circle restructuring for decentralised administration,” said a GHMC official. “The newly appointed zonal commissioners assumed charge on Friday, enabling immediate operationalisation of the reorganised zones and strengthening on-ground governance and supervision,” he added.

The term of the GHMC council will end on February 10, 2026. The government has appointed Jayesh Ranjan as special chief secretary for the newly-created metropolitan affairs and urban development department within the HMDA limits.

Briefing the media on Friday, GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan said elaborate arrangements have been made for smooth functioning of the corporation.

The government plans to streamline integrated planning and civic services, and enable balanced and sustainable urban growth. The GHMC will enable integrated metropolitan planning across land use, transportation, housing, stormwater drainage, and environmental management, and reduce fragmented development.

The newly-merged areas will gain access to the GHMC’s financial resources, technical expertise, and standardised civic services, including sanitation, solid waste management, public health, mosquito control, and emergency response. Another value addition for people in areas around the Outer Ring Road (ORR) is enhanced grievance redressal.

People living in the extended GHMC can report their grievances either by calling 040-21111111 or through MyGHMC mobile app or by flagging the issue on social media networks like ‘X’.
