Showers Cool State, Hyderabad Slows in Evening Rain
Police advised motorists to avoid waterlogged roads and unnecessary travel as rain was expected to continue into the night.
Hyderabad:Moderate rain across parts of Telangana on Monday brought down temperatures and offered relief from humid conditions, even as evening showers slowed traffic and exposed pothole-ridden roads across Hyderabad.
The city recorded an average of 4.4 mm cumulative rainfall, although several parts of the city received sudden and heavy evening showers that lasted less than an hour but brought significant waterlogging, traffic and delays.
The evening peak hour rain led to slow-moving traffic on several main roads and waterlogging at low-lying stretches, with commuters reporting longer travel times, crowded metros and surged prices and extra tips by autos and other ride-hailing apps. Police advised motorists to avoid waterlogged roads and unnecessary travel as rain was expected to continue into the night.
According to the Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS), Kodangal in Vikarabad district recorded the state’s highest rainfall at 101.3 mm, followed by Sirgapoor in Sangareddy (73.5 mm), Kadpal in Sangareddy (69.5 mm) and Kapra in Medchal-Malkajgiri (69.5 mm). Kondurg in Rangareddy received 67 mm, while Manoor in Sangareddy recorded 64 mm.
At the district level, Vikarabad recorded the highest average rainfall of 9.4 mm, followed by Sangareddy (6.7 mm), Jogulamba Gadwal (4.5 mm), Warangal (4.1 mm), Mahabubnagar (3.6 mm) and Wanaparthy (3.4 mm). Telangana’s average rainfall stood at 1.3 mm, classified as light rainfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Hyderabad recorded a maximum temperature of 32.4°C, below the normal forecast of around 34°C, while the minimum was 24.3°C. It forecast generally cloudy skies with light to moderate rain or thundershowers in parts of the city towards evening or night.
The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain at isolated places across Telangana through August 7, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph likely in several districts on Monday and strong surface winds expected across the state over the next few days.
