Shivadhar Reddy Calls on DCP Injured in Chaderghat Firing Incident
The firing incident occurred at Victoria Playground under the Chaderghat police limits at about 5.30 pm on Saturday
Hyderabad: Director General of Police Batulla Shivadhar Reddy, along with Hyderabad police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar, on Sunday met southeast zone DCP S. Chaitanya Kumar, who had opened fire at a mobile phone snatcher, and his gunman M.V.S. Murthy, who sustained injuries after being attacked by the suspect Mohamed Omar Ansari on Saturday.
Shivadhar Reddy appreciated their courage and bravery and wished them a speedy recovery.
Speaking to the media, Shivadhar Reddy said: “While attempting to apprehend the accused involved in mobile phone thefts, DCP Chaitanya Kumar and his gunman V.S.N. Murthy chased the accused for nearly 750 metres. During the chase, the accused attacked them with knives.”
He added that both officers had displayed great courage during the operation. “Both are in stable condition and are expected to be discharged from the hospital tomorrow. Efforts are underway to trace the two other absconding accused,” the DGP said.
Later, Sajjanar said that special teams were working to apprehend associates of Ansari, a rowdysheeter. “We are gathering information about Ansari’s recent movements and those of his associates. Our teams have enhanced visible policing across the city,” Sajjanar said.
“Citizens need not worry — Hyderabad city police will always ensure their safety. Strict action will be taken against rowdy sheeters and offenders, and special surveillance has also been placed on mobile-snatching gangs,” he added.
Chaitanya Kumar sustained injuries to his neck, while gunman Murthy suffered a leg injury. Their driver Sandeep acted swiftly during the incident and played a crucial role in containing the situation. “All three — DCP Chaitanya Kumar, gunman Murthy, and driver Sandeep — exhibited great courage and bravery,” the commissioner said.
Ansari has 22 criminal cases against him for including extortion, threats, and property offences. He has twice been booked under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act, and a rowdysheet is maintained against him at the Kalapathar police station.
Sajjanar said Ansari, who sustained injuries in the firing, underwent surgery and was in a stable condition.
Five special teams have been formed to trace the two absconding accused. Senior officers including DCPs Chintamaneni Srinivas, (west zone) and Sneha Mehra (south zone), and senior officials were present during the DGP’s hospital visit.
