HYDERABAD: Amid continuing concerns over school bus safety, the school education department (SED) has directed officials to strictly enforce school bus safety rules, warning that action will be taken against private schools that operate unfit vehicles, overload buses, engage unlicensed drivers or run transport services without the required permissions.

Every private school bus must possess a valid permit and fitness certificate issued by the competent authority. Students should not be transported beyond the approved seating capacity under any circumstances, the note said.

The department directed schools to engage only qualified drivers and comply with all prescribed safety requirements related to student transportation and obtain the necessary permissions from the transport department before operating buses. Officials warned that any breach of the rules would be treated seriously.

Department regional deputy directors, district educational officers, Mandal educational officers and school managements are instructed to adhere to the provisions of GO 35, dated March 16, 2011 and officials have been asked to communicate the instructions to all private schools under their jurisdiction and see that the regulations are followed without fail.
