Residents of New Vasavinagar, Sector B, in Secunderabad Cantonment have been facing contaminated drinking water for six months, with sewage reportedly entering the supply through a damaged pipeline. The prolonged issue has raised health concerns even as the Cantonment Board urged residents to conserve water.

At a water awareness programme held at the Board office on Tuesday, CEO Arvind Kumar Dwivedi asked residents to use water judiciously and avoid wastage. Officials, including waterworks superintendent D. Rajesh Kumar, resident welfare representatives and community members attended the programme.

Dwivedi said responsible water use should become a habit, but residents pointed out that conservation must go hand in hand with clean supply. “For the past six months, we have been worried about the quality of drinking water. If sewage is mixing with the supply, how are we supposed to know whether it is safe?” asked Radhika Jain, a resident. Her neighbour Kalpana added: “We need a permanent solution, not just inspections. The pipeline must be repaired and the water tested.”

Another resident, Girish Yadav, said: “Officials are asking us to use water carefully, which is important. But residents also need a reliable supply of clean water.”

Residents brought the issue to Cantonment MLA Sriganesh Narayan, who met the Board CEO with the affected families and sought urgent intervention. Narayan asked the CEO to inspect the stretch, replace damaged sections, identify contamination points and test water quality. He also sought alternative drinking water arrangements until the problem was resolved.
