Hyderabad: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting dry weather across Telangana and a dip in minimum temperatures by 2°C to 3°C in isolated pockets over the next few days, the Directorate of Public Health and Family Welfare (DPHFW) has issued a general health advisory warning of a possible rise in seasonal flu and other acute respiratory infections.
Seasonal flu is a highly contagious respiratory infection, marked by symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches and fatigue. It spreads easily through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Health officials said most people recover within a week with adequate rest and fluids, but certain groups remain vulnerable.
Pregnant women, children below five years, senior citizens above 65 years and individuals with chronic medical conditions are at a higher risk of severe illness. The advisory urges people in these categories to consult a doctor at the nearest health facility if they develop flu-like symptoms. Immediate medical attention is advised for warning signs such as high fever, breathing difficulty, bluish discoloration of skin or lips, blood in sputum, or altered behavior.
The health department has advised citizens to follow basic preventive measures, including covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, washing hands frequently with soap and water, and avoiding crowded places when unwell.
As a precaution, the government has made arrangements for special beds and essential medicines at all public health facilities across the state. During emergencies, citizens have been advised to call 108 ambulance services, officials said.
