Sardar Mahal To Get ₹30-Cr Facelift
Sardar Mahal to transform into heritage hotel: Reports
HYDERABAD: After months of delay, restoration work at the historic Sardar Mahal in the Old City has resumed, with the Quli Qutub Shah Urban Development Authority (QQSUDA) setting March 2026 as the new completion deadline
The project had stalled due to a funding crunch, but work has picked up pace following the clearance of pending contractor bills by the concerned department. A QQSUDA official confirmed that the financial issue had been resolved and work is back on track.
The ₹30-crore project, being executed by a private agency, aims to transform the palace into an art gallery, café and heritage accommodation for tourists visiting Charminar, modelled on the Neemrana Fort Palace in Rajasthan. Once completed, it is expected to boost tourism in the Old City, complementing attractions like Charminar, Chowmahallah Palace and Chudi Bazaar.
Built in 1900 by Nizam Mir Mahbub Ali Khan in European style for his consort Sardar Begum, the palace was never occupied by her as it failed to meet her expectations. The building later came under the control of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in 1965 due to unpaid property taxes and was used as GHMC’s south zone office.
Sardar Mahal is listed as a heritage structure by the Heritage Conservation Committee and the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).
