Hyderabad: There is an alarming rise in road accidents in Telangana, averaging 32 crashes every day, according to data released by the Regional Transport Authority (RTA). Two-wheeler collisions remain the deadliest: 36 per cent of all fatalities involve riders who were not wearing helmets.

To tackle the crisis, the RTA plans to establish Road Safety Clubs in schools and colleges across the state. Officials hope the initiative will instil safe-driving habits among young people and curb accident rates. Nationally, India records about 980 road accidents daily.

As part of the campaign, the RTA’s central zone organised a road-safety awareness programme on Thursday at Government ITI College, Mallepally. More than 300 students and 50 staff members attended the session, where Regional Transport Officer Purushottam Reddy and deputy transport commissioner Afrin outlined key safety measures for motorists and pedestrians. They also briefed the audience on the Good Samaritan Law and the importance of the “golden hour” in saving accident victims. Faculty members said students posed several questions during the interactive session, which they described as highly informative.
