River Waters To Heat Up Debate in House

Besides water issues, the state is witnessing acrimonious verbal exchanges between BRS and Congress almost on a daily basis

Hyderabad: Tempers are expected to come to a boil when the Telangana Assembly convenes on Monday, against the backdrop of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s pungent response to BRS president K. Chandrashekar Rao questioning the Congress government on irrigation projects and river-water sharing.

The Assembly will meet on Monday and take a three-day break to reconvene next year. As per the agenda released by the Legislature secretariat, the government will table several ordinances including the one to increase the GHMC area to over 2,000 sq km with 300 wards.

On Monday the House is likely to adjourn after it takes up two condolence motions taking note of the passing of former MLAs Ramreddy Damodar Reddy from Suryapet constituency, and Konda Laxma Reddy, former MLA from Chevella constituency.

The Assembly is also expected to take up the issue of reservations for the Backward Classes community for the ensuing zilla and mandal elections, as well as the proposed legislation against hate speech which the Chief Minister had previously announced.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, who arrived in the city on Sunday afternoon from New Delhi, met with some of his Cabinet colleagues and senior officers to discuss issues related to the session. While the government is preparing to make a detailed presentation on irrigation related issues including inter-state water sharing, and the Palamuru-Rangareddy lift irrigation scheme (PRLIS), the Chief Minister is expected to explain the progress achieved in two years of the Congress government's rule, and implementation of welfare schemes while touching upon the Congress party's victories in the recent panchayat elections.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister was understood to have discussed the issue of 42 per cent reservations for the BC community in view of ZPTC and MPTC elections in Telangana which are expected to be held in the near future.

The Chief Minister is learnt to have assigned tasks to the ministers on explaining the government's development plans highlighting Telangana Rising 2047 initiative which received a mammoth response in the form of over 5.7 lakh crore worth of investments in Telangana. With developments surrounding the expansion of the GHMC area, this issue too is likely to figure in the discussions.

The session is also expected to see the government introduce a Bill on hate speech, following an announcement by the Chief Minister during the Christmas celebrations organised by the government.

A meeting of the business advisory council chaired by the Speaker with representatives of all parties will be held on Monday during which the Speaker is expected to finalise the regular business activities of the House, key agendas, time schedules for each party.

During the day, the government is expected to take up the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, the Telangana Municipalities (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2025 and a copy of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2025.
