Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Tuesday virtually unveiled Telangana Talli statues installed across all district collectorates from Bharat Future City, venue of the Telangana Rising Global Summit. Each statue is 12-feet-tall, standing on a six-foot-tall pedestal. Statues in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Mulugu, Nalgonda and Narayanpet will be unveiled later, as finishing works are still underway.

Revanth Reddy recalled that it was on December 9, 2009, that Congress leader Sonia Gandhi initiated the formal process for the creation of Telangana, a moment that restored the self-respect and aspirations of the people. Marking the significance of the date, the state government chose December 9 as the day to unveil Telangana Talli statues in all district collectorates in what the Chief Minister described as the “people’s government.”

The day coincides with Sonia Gandhi’s birthday. Congress leaders and workers celebrated the occasion across the state, highlighting her role as UPA chairperson when the announcement for Telangana’s formation was made. Revanth Reddy noted that Sonia Gandhi had first promised statehood for Telangana at a public meeting in Karimnagar in 2004 and fulfilled that commitment five years later.

The Chief Minister said that Telangana Talli statue was first unveiled at Telangana Secretariat on December 9 last year and reiterated that December 9 would henceforth be observed annually as ‘Telangana Talli Avatarana Dinotsavam’, symbolising both the announcement of statehood and Sonia Gandhi’s birthday. He said the tradition would continue “as long as Telangana exists.” The Telangana Talli statue at the State Secretariat was unveiled on the same day last year.

This year marks the 16th anniversary of the 2009 announcement initiating the process for a separate Telangana state.

The Telangana Talli statue depicts a traditional rural woman farmer. She holds maize, corn and foxtail millet in her left hand, symbolising the state’s agricultural heritage, while her right hand is raised in a gesture of assurance. The adornments—red bindi, clay bangles, anklet and nose stud—represent Telangana’s cultural identity. The government designed the statue to serve as an inspiration to all sections of society, reflecting the values and aspirations of the state.
