Hyderabad: Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, during the debate on the Municipal and Panchayat Raj Act Amendment Bills in the Legislative Assembly, criticized the Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) for obstructing efforts to provide 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs).

He stated that the current government had earlier passed two bills in the Assembly - one ensuring 42% reservation in education and employment, and another for 42% reservation in local bodies - and sent them to the Governor for approval. However, the Governor forwarded them to the President without approval. “These bills have been pending with the President for nearly five months,” the CM said.
Responding to the High Court’s directive to conduct local body elections by September 30 with proper reservation implementation, the CM explained, “In 2018, KCR introduced the Panchayat Raj Act, and in 2013, the Municipal Act was passed — both restricting reservations to a 50% cap. When these laws posed a deadlock, our government acted swiftly by introducing an ordinance, which was again sent to the President by the Governor, influenced by BRS leaders.”
Revanth Reddy lashed out at BRS MLA Gangula Kamalakar for his contradictory stance. “Kamalakar claims he supports BC reservations, but didn’t even participate in our delegation efforts. We wrote to the Prime Minister five times seeking an appointment- there was no response. We staged a dharna at Jantar Mantar with the support of 100 MPs from other states. Yet, BRS Rajya Sabha MPs remained indifferent,” he said.
“Their party leadership is unwilling to grant 42% reservation to the weaker sections. Even now, BRS is trying to create chaos in the House to block the bill. This people’s government is committed to fulfilling its promises. We urge cooperation; otherwise, the people will respond appropriately,” the Chief Minister concluded.
