Revanth Reddy Inaugurates Tech And Innovation Site of Eli Lilly
Lilly has already taken 100 professionals at the Hyderabad facility and plans to expand the headcount to 1,500 over the next few years.
Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday said that about 70 new global capacity centres (GCC) had come up in the city this year, with efforts underway to take the number to 100. He was speaking at the inauguration of pharma major Eli Lilly and Company’s GCC here. The company is launching its new technology and innovation site in the city.
"We are not opening just any ordinary centre or GCC, but the nerve centre of Eli Lilly. It is as if the brain of the corporation will operate from here. It will manage, lead, and accelerate Eli Lilly’s global operations," said Revanth Reddy.
The Chief Minister noted that Hyderabad had transformed into a hub for global capability centres (GCCs) over the past 20 months. The government remained committed to providing a transparent, progressive, and innovation-driven ecosystem. He said the government would ensure that the life sciences industry could grow manifold in Hyderabad and redefine global health sciences capabilities.
He said Telangana was home to about 2,000 life sciences and pharmaceutical companies. The city has become the preferred destination for capability centres of the world’s top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Eli Lilly, he said, was the latest to choose Hyderabad for its global operations, which was clinching proof that, in less than 20 months, the Telangana government has made Hyderabad the global GCC capital and hub,” he said.
He credited the progress in the life sciences sector to the efforts of IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu and senior officials.
Addressing Eli Lilly’s employees and officials, the Chief Minister said, "You are not just living and working in Hyderabad — you are now part of our family. You are shaping the future of global healthcare from Hyderabad. You are recognising and endorsing Hyderabad, and you are telling the entire world that Hyderabad has the talent.”
"We are proud that one in every three vaccines administered anywhere in the world is developed or manufactured in Hyderabad," the Chief Minister added. The city was already, with the presence of over 2,000 companies, making it the life sciences capital of India.
Revanth Reddy said GCC growth is a crucial step towards achieving the 'Telangana Rising 2047' vision and the goal of transforming the state into a ₹1 trillion economy in the next ten years. The long-term objective is for Telangana to contribute 10 per cent to the country’s GDP, he said.
Sridhar Babu said Telangana is leading in attracting investments. It received `3.2 lakh crore in 19 months, followed by Gujarat at `2.6 lakh crore and Tamil Nadu at `2.1 lakh crore. He said the Telangana government had been in talks with Eli Lilly for the past year. “Our intent is to build a robust and efficient medtech ecosystem for the future,” he said.
He added that Telangana should be the launchpad for global products and technologies. “We are creating confidence among investors. We are investor-friendly and committed to making Hyderabad the next frontier of research and development in the life sciences segment. About 1.1 crore square feet has been added to R&D infrastructure, making it the fastest-growing medtech ecosystem,” Sridhar Babu said. The state produces about 3 lakh STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medicine) graduates annually.
Eli Lilly executive vice-president and chief information and digital officer Diogo Rau was was present at the event along with other officials.
